Before the 18th Century, Saint Helier only had a string of houses, warehouses, shops and a market place. It originated as a fishing village beside a parish church, where the king’s court usually met. It however became the seat of the island's government after Elizabeth Castle was built. Its location is thought to have been settled on during the Roman control of Gaul. A greater part of St. Helier is rural, with its suburbs sprawling into St. Lawrence and St. Clement.Read more on Jersey's Capital
