A Brief Description Note: An updated Florida Description page will be posted here by November 1, 2007. The author Budd Schulberg once quipped about Florida, "...It's a melting pot, a frontier, a place to improve your health or your luck."
First sighted and explored by Juan Ponce de León in 1513, he subsequently claimed the land for Spain and named it La Florida, meaning "Land of Flowers."
This 400 mile long peninsula is home to St. Augustine, America's oldest European settlement still in operation, first settled in 1565.
Because of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Florida came under British rule. Then Spain took back the land they once controlled, only to cede it to the U.S. in 1821.
This tourism magnet is known worldwide as the land of sunshine, orange groves, Disney World, Universal Studios, Kennedy Space Center, the electric city of Miami, stylish beach communities (north to south), the Florida Keys, Everglades, and so much more
In addition, Florida is the most popular retirement destination on the planet, so if you're searching high and low for Ponce de Leon's legendary Fountain of Youth, well, Florida will surely end that search.
