In exacting geographic definitions, Europe is really not a continent, but part of the peninsula of Euroasia which includes all of Europe and Asia. However, it's still widely referred to as a continent. The European continent is separated from Asia by Russia's Ural Mountains, and the Caspian and Black Seas. Europe's highest point is Mt. Elbrus in European Russia at 18,481 ft (5,633m), just north of the Georgia/Russian border. Europe's lowest point is on the surface of the Caspian Sea, at 92 ft (28m) below sea level. Geography Notes Small parts of Turkey and Russia are considered to be a part of both Asia and Europe respectively. We have some specific definitions and details here! On July 1, 2006, the United Nations, the U.S. State Department, as well as other countries around the world now recognize both Montenegro and Serbia as separate nations. We are currently producing separate maps and individual pages for both countries. Historically, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been long associated with Asia and the Middle East. In recent years some sources now consider them to be more closely aligned with Europe based on their modern economic and political trends. In fact, both are similar to the former CIS country of Georgia, now included as part of Europe. We have moved in that direction and the same can be said for the island country of Cyprus. Please note: Regarding Europe, we attempt to show the modern definitions, but in worldwide geography, there are often many answers (or opinions) to what appears to be a simple question.
