Located in Southwestern Europe, Andorra has a 118.00 km border with France (55 km) and Spain (63 km).

Andorra la Vella is the capital city of Andorra. It is located in the east Pyrenees between Spain and France near the confluence of Valira del Norte and Valira Rivers. The city's modernization began in the 1930s, but it was not until 1993 that it was constitutionally recognized as the capital city. The city has a population of about 25,000 and an urban population of approximately 40,000. Tourists visit the city because of its weather and historic buildings.

Catalan is the official language of the Principality of Andorra. It is spoken by a majority of the population as the mother tongue language. Catalan is considered a romance language that was derived from the Vulgar Latin. Spanish and Portuguese are also spoken. French is spoken by a small fraction while English is mostly limited to those in the tourism industry. Between 1955 and 1995, Spanish immigrants flocked Andorra from Catalonia and Valencia. Between 1960 and 1980, Portuguese immigrants also arrived in the country. The Catalan, Spanish, Portuguese and French in Andorra are the respective standard variants.

Andorra is an independent country. It has been independent since 1278. Its constitution was last ratified in 1993.

Andorra is a parliamentary constitutional diarchy. The President of France and the Bishop of La Seu D’Urgell (Spain) are the co-princes of Andorra while the parliament elects the head of government. The posts of the co-princes are inseparable. Eligible voters of Andorra elect the 28 parliamentarians who serve for four years. The parliamentarians then elect the president and the speaker.

Flag

The flag of Andorra is a tricolored flag consisting of three vertical stripes: a blue strip on the left, a yellow stripe at the center, and a red stripe on the right. The country’s coat of arms is located on the yellow strip at the center of the flag. The yellow strip is wider than the other two stripes so that the ratio of the stripes is 8:9:8, while the ratio of the whole flag is 7:10. The flag was officially adopted in 1866 without the coat of arms. In 1969 the coat of arms was adopted, and in 1971 it was integrated as part of the Andorran flag.
