arrow Climate
New York, like all of the northeastern U.S. States, experiences four distinct weather seasons.

Spring months are cool and wet, while summers are generally mild and pleasant, with warmer (often hot) conditions south and southeast. Fall slides gently into winter, with moderate (ideal) temperatures.

Winters statewide are generally cold and snowy, and lakes freeze solid, central and north. Snow fall is significant in the Adirondack Mountains, and along the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario, as this area receives more snow than anywhere else east of the Rockies, in fact, over 200 yearly inches are common.

Mid-state, the average high temperature in July is in the high 70's, while in January, high temps only reach the low 20's. In New York City the average high temperature in July is in the low 80's, while in January, high temps are in the mid 30's.

Statewide, rainfall approaches 35 inches per year, with much higher amounts in the upstate mountains, and in the southeast. For a look at New York State precipitation levels, view this map!
