North Dakota was admitted into the Union on November 2, 1889, becoming our Nation’s 39th State. Nicknamed the "Peace Garden State," North Dakota's quarter depicts a pair of grazing American bison in the foregound with a sunset view of the rugged buttes and canyons helping to define the State's famed Badlands in the background.
