Maryland Quarter The Maryland quarter, the 2nd quarter in the Year 2000 50 State Quarters® Program series, features the unusual dome of the Maryland Statehouse, surrounded by White Oak leaf clusters and its nickname, "The Old Line State".

The Maryland Statehouse dome is the country's largest wooden dome built without nails. The Statehouse has been home to Maryland's colonial legislature and the nation's first peacetime capital. The Treaty of Paris was ratified here, ending the Revolutionary War.

The leaf clusters are from the official state tree, the White Oak. The nickname, Old Line State, is in honor of its "troops of the line", who won praise from George Washington, the Continental Army Commander-in-Chief, during the Revolutionary War.

Maryland became the Nation's seventh state on April 28, 1788.
