Weather
![]() ![]()
In the southern areas of Finland winter temperatures are milder, but still cold, while summer days (May through September) can be downright pleasant.
![]()
Above the Arctic Circle (in the far north) the summer sun never completely sets, thus the phrase, "Polar Night." Winter days there are dark and rather eerie as the sun never rises for almost two months.

Further south in Finland summer days are longer with lingering evening light. In winter the sun seems to just creep above the horizon; days are short, and available light is muted and less intense.
![]()
In winter, Finland (north to south) is covered by a blanket of snow. Along its eastern border with Russia, and in the northern areas that snow is often deep, with some remaining on the ground into early May, and much later to the north of the Arctic Circle.

Rainfall is spread somewhat evenly throughout the year, while summer storms with significant rainfall are rather common in the south.
