World Time Zones The worldwide standard for coordinated universal time is now abbreviated as UTC. Some sources refer to it as UTC/GMT. The current UTC (or Coordinated Universal Time), formerly known as GMT (or Greenwich Mean Time) is shown directly above the world map, and that starting time zone for worldwide time is indicated with a O (in the olive green square) at the bottom of the map. The numbers shown in each time zone (left or right) of UTC indicate the number of hours you should add or subtract to find the current time in your area of interest. For example, the U.S. State of California is indicated as being -8. To determine the current time in California, subtract 8 hours from the UTC time shown below. On the other hand, the country of Turkey is indicated as +2, so to to find the current time in Turkey, just add 2 hours to the UTC time below. Irregular Time Zones Some governments make local time zones decisions that deviate from the norm. Note that India is +5½ from UTC, while Myanmar (Burma) is +6½, Iran is +4½, Iraq is +3½, Nepal is +5¾ and Central Australia is +9½. The Canadian island of Newfoundland is -3½ hours from UTC, some smaller islands in French Polynesia are -9½, while the Pitcairn Islands are -8½.
